Introducing our Telehealth Platform, GuardianConnect

For over two decades, Guardian Exercise Rehabilitation has been assisting clients nationally with community-based programs – operating out of local gymnasiums and leisure centres, as well as peoples’ own homes. However, we’ve also kept our more regional and remote clients in mind, offering a Telehealth service for a number of years. 

With the unfortunate advent of viral respiratory illness COVID-19 across the globe this year, we rolled our sleeves up and got to work expanding our existing Telehealth platform, unveiling GuardianConnect so we could continue providing valuable assistance and support to clients in need of rehabilitation exercise services.

How does Telehealth Work?

“Telehealth is the delivery of health care services, where distance is a critical factor, by all health care professionals using information and communication technologies for the purpose of providing care to assist with advancing the health of individuals.” (WHO – The World Health Organization)

At Guardian Exercise Rehabilitation, our Telehealth services link our clients with a clinician through videoconferencing. From here, we:

  1. Conduct an initial assessment to discuss individual needs, identify factors influencing recovery, and formulate an appropriate rehabilitation plan through collaborative goal setting practices.
  2. Complete subsequent review sessions to set up an exercise program and provide ongoing progressions of the program, working together towards the agreed goals
  3. Provide relevant education and support through bespoke, thoughtful and creative means (did you know tinned foods can make great weights?)

Any Real Life Examples?

In April of 2020, our Exercise Physiologist Teagan commenced seeing a factory worker who had injured his lower back at work. He was completely unfit for work and also suffering from depression and anxiety symptoms, only worsened by the financial and environmental impacts of COVID-19. Utilising the GuardianConnect platform, Teagan completed a series of digital reviews with the client over an eight week period. She mailed exercise equipment to him which enabled him to complete his exercise rehabilitation program at home, and he even included his family in his telehealth sessions – completing exercises alongside his wife and young daughter. After two months, Teagan’s client reported a return to pain-free functionality and made a full return to work. Happily, he also reported feeling empowered and extremely confident in continuing his home-based exercise routine independently.

Where To From Here?

We will continue to offer the GuardianConnect service to clients in need during – and far beyond – the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a valuable and meaningful resource, with the evidence speaking for itself. To cite just a few examples:

  1. Results from three individual trials showed that Telehealth was beneficial in improving quality of life for those suffering with chronic low back pain
  2. Research showed high client satisfaction with a 6-week Telehealth rehabilitation intervention compared to usual care after total knee arthroplasty
  3. Telehealth services have been shown to be effective in supporting recovery from mental illnesses including Depression, Anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
